Reduce Indoor Water Use

Wash only full loads of laundry or dishes.

Use an Energy Star washing machine and water heater.

Take half baths or short showers with high efficiency shower heads.

Do not unnecessarily flush toilets.

Install low-flow showerheads, faucets and aerators.

Turn the thermostat on your water heater to 120ºF.

Place a drop of food coloring in the tank.

Wait 15 minutes.

If the color shows up in the toilet bowl, you have a leak.

CHECK YOUR WATER METER
Locate your water meter, either in the basement, crawl space or outdoor covered pit. There are many styles but they all measure how water flows.

Turn off all faucets & water using appliances like your ice maker. Check the flow indicator on your meter. If you don’t have an indicator, write down the numbers.
​
Wait 30-60 minutes and see if the numbers have changed or if the flow indicator is moving. If either is the case, you most likely have a leak.
​
If you have a leak, turn off either the indoor or outdoor isolation valve. If the flow indicator is no longer moving, the leak is located where the water was turned off.
