SAVING WATER IS AN INVESTMENT!
Into both the future of your community as well as your personal finances.
The less water you use, the more money you can save. There are many things that you can do on your own to conserve water.
REDUCE INDOOR WATER USE
-
Wash only full loads of laundry or dishes.
-
Use an Energy Star washing machine and water heater.
-
Take half baths or short showers with high efficiency shower heads.
-
Do not unnecessarily flush toilets.
-
Install low-flow showerheads, faucets and aerators.
-
Turn the thermostat on your water heater to 120ºF.
-
Insulate your water heater tank and hot water pipes
-
Don’t let the water run when brushing teeth or washing hands.
CHECK YOUR WATER METER
-
Locate your water meter, either in the basement, crawl space or outdoor covered pit. There are many styles but they all measure how water flows.
-
Turn off all faucets & water using appliances like your ice maker. Check the flow indicator on your meter. If you don’t have an indicator, write down the numbers.
-
Wait 30-60 minutes and see if the numbers have changed or if the flow indicator is moving. If either is the case, you most likely have a leak.
-
If you have a leak, turn off either the indoor or outdoor isolation valve. If the flow indicator is no longer moving, the leak is located where the water was turned off.
IRRIGATION TECHNIQUES
-
Adjust your irrigation times for the seasons and the weather.
-
Reduce watering times and water only between 2am and 6am.
-
Avoid runoff by watering in 5 minute increments.
-
Check your irrigation system for broken, leaking, clogged and misdirected nozzles.
-
Install a drip irrigation system and use a Smart Controller.
REDUCE OUTDOOR WATER USE
-
Choose drought resistant plants or retrofit your lawn.
-
Install porous walkways and patios.
-
Use a bucket to wash your car.
-
Use a broom to clean your drive way instead of a hose.
-
Use a shutoff nozzle on your hose.
